Overview

West Lake Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Melbourne’s Chinatown at 189 Little Bourke Street, stands as a timeless beacon of authentic Cantonese cuisine. For decades, this establishment has cultivated a reputation for delivering classic dishes with unwavering dedication, making it a beloved institution for locals and visitors alike seeking genuine Chinese flavors.

The restaurant’s charm lies not only in its extensive menu but also in the sincerity of its experience. From the moment you step inside, the ambient warmth and steady bustle hint at a place where tradition and quality intersect. The space feels inviting yet unpretentious, capturing the essence of a genuine Cantonese eatery, ideal for both family gatherings and intimate dinners.

West Lake’s menu is a celebration of Cantonese staples and chef’s specialties that showcase depth and precision. Dim sum lovers will find the sui mai a standout—each bite filled with tender, savory goodness. The braised abalone and 黃油走地鸡 (butter-fried native chicken) highlight the kitchen’s mastery over poultry and seafood, delivering robust tastes balanced with delicate textures. For those eager to try something unique, dishes like crocodile meat cooked in XO sauce offer an adventurous yet authentic culinary experience.

The fried noodles and rice options further underline the kitchen’s skill in achieving the quintessential wok hei—the smoky, charred flavor that defines excellent Cantonese stir fries. Dishes such as beef dry fried rice noodles and seafood fried noodles bring together fresh ingredients and bold seasoning, satisfying both traditional and modern palates.

Many patrons speak highly of the attentive service, often highlighting the friendly, warm staff who add a personal touch to the dining experience. The old-style push carts for dim sum create a nostalgic atmosphere, taking guests back to a more traditional way of Chinese dining. This blend of old and new makes West Lake not just a spot for food but a cultural immersion.

West Lake’s target audience ranges widely—commuters craving a reliable lunch, families searching for hearty weekend meals, to food enthusiasts eager to explore authentic Cantonese dishes beyond the usual offerings. Its location in Melbourne’s Chinatown makes it accessible while preserving an air of authenticity rarely found in chain restaurants.

In essence, West Lake Restaurant exemplifies the best of Cantonese cuisine through its faithful adherence to tradition, fresh ingredients, and thoughtful service. Whether you are drawn by the rich flavors of Ma Po Bean Curd, the crispy charm of fried calamari, or the meticulous preparation of its signature chicken, West Lake promises a memorable journey into Chinese culinary heritage right in the heart of Melbourne.

We were just passing through Chinatown when the delicious smell from this place caught our attention, so even though it was not in our plan, my family and I decided to give it a try, and it turned out to be such a great decision. The snow crab was so tasty, and a kind older lady helped us with cracking it and checked on us throughout the meal to make sure we had everything we needed. Her warm service made our dining experience absolutely perfect The mapo tofu and stir fried morning glory were also amazing. We will definitely come back to try more dishes next time.

The food is tasty. We liked the duck and the fresh veg with oyster sauce. And the chicken feet is huge They still use the old style push carts for food ordering. Service is prompt but polite. Can get pretty crowded over weekend lunch. Great place for an authentic dim sum meal.

I dined at Westlake on a Wednesday night in late November 2025 with 7 former work colleagues. Unlike a number of reviewers here I found the service to be attentive and friendly, the food was hot and fresh an the general atmosphere of the restaurant very pleasant. I did not order the typical Aussie satay beef, beef in black bean sauce, sweet and sour prawns or yum cha for dinner, but chose cha siew, choy sum and rice. This arrived promptly with a bowl of broth. The choy sum was fresh and cooked properly maintaining its crispness; the cha siew was tender, lean and very tasty. I shared an enjoyable bottle of pinot gris with one of our party. Various extra requests that our table had were met with politeness, promptness and a smile. A good night out.

This is a Melbourne institution!!! Westlake has been serving up classic Chinese dishes for decades. The owner-chef still works everyday and is always there to make sure the dishes go out good. Every dish we had could not be faulted. Delicious and fresh. Their Signature Chicken was very very good!
